Officially the use of MAS 90 3.x on Windows Vista or Windows 7 is not supported by Sage.

Support for the latest Microsoft operating system was only added to version 4.1 and higher of Sage MAS 90 and 200 (review the official MAS90 and MAS200 supported platforms here).

However if you use a workaround you may be able to setup a workstation running Vista or 7.

Warning: Proceed at your own risk. We recommend only using hardware and operating systems certified by Sage and following the recommendations of Sage or your Sage Business Partner.

If you attempt to setup a workstation running Windows Vista or 7 then you may get the error:

Setup cannot extract the disk drive letter from the MAS 90 directory path \\drivesharename\mas90apps\MAS90\ – please make sure you are running workstation setup from a mapped network drive or a local drive and not a UNC path, and run workstation setup again — and then shows an UNC instead of drive letter.

The workaround?

Install workstation setup from your main MAS90 or MAS200 CD.

Insert the CD into your computer and instead of doing a full re-install of the programs click on the workstation setup icon.

Thanks to these 90Minds Members for providing this workaround:

I just finished our first AccuPOS implementation.

AccuPOS is a provider of award winning Point Of Sale, Inventory Management and Time Clock solutions worldwide for users of QuickBooks, Peachtree by Sage, Simply Accounting by Sage, Sage MAS 90 and 200, and Line 50 by Sage.

It’s very easy to set up although the documentation is a little scattered and getting the latest download was confusing. At least they have 24 hour support and will connect and setup any workstation to make sure it’s configured correctly. And they are very quick to answer any questions.

Their web site describes the product as:

Sage MAS AccuPOS Point of Sale is an innovator in the market that bridges the gap between front end Point of Sale and the Sage MAS 90 accounting product. This unique solution concentrates on collecting the details sales information necessary to make Sage MAS 90 a more viable and dynamic in the retail and food service industry.

Sage MAS 90 AccuPOS Point of Sale delivers versatile, touchscreen friendly interface that seamlessly communicates sales detail to the accounting software as if it were processed from within. With Sage AccuPOS Point of Sale inventory is always managed from Sage MAS 90, not the Point of Sale system.

Transactions processed using the Sage MAS 90 AccuPOS Point of Sale system will appear in Sage MAS 90 as line item invoices, but with supported input from scanners, scales and touchscreens. This eliminates duplicate data entry and redundant accounting features, allowing Sage MAS 90 to either be off-line or off-site while you are processing transactions in Sage MAS 90 AccuPOS Point of Sale. Sage MAS AccuPOS Point of Sale is also seamlessly integrated into Sage Payment Solutions for easy Credit Card processing without having to pay for middle ware like PC Charge.

Hands On First Look at Accupos for Sage MAS 90 or 200

AccuPOS offers all the standard retail or restaurant features such as remote printing for the kitchen and bar, tips, comps, table layouts, choices menus (i.e. building a burger), specials, sales, timed sales (i.e. happy hour), price levels, etc. Designing and programming the touch keys and table layouts is very easy.

The integration link is straightforward and works with VI to import a daily sales totals for each till and an invoice in S/O Invoice Data Entry – all automatic. The invoice summarizes total sales for each inventory item along with the total money collected as the deposit amount for clearing later (tender summary) so the invoice should always be net zero. A special POS customer is set up for these invoices. You can also sell to MAS 90 customers (with or without terms) and those sales will import as their own invoice.

They offer a very nice spill-proof Posiflex touch screen all-in-one with integrated credit card swipe ($1400), cash drawer ($215), and printer ($429) although it works on any PC. All plug and play. The POS licenses are purchased directly from Sage (one station license with one-year support pro-rated to match Sage $3080) – and yes, it counts toward your tier.

AccuPOS integrates with items, item aliases, misc charges, customers, and sales tax codes. They use (prefer) Sage Payment Services for credit cards which is great because you can use it in MAS 90, too.

If the POS is located on the network, the transfer is automatic as soon as you Z-Out. If the POS is remote, they offer a service (via internet) that posts the transaction to their servers and holds the transaction until MAS 90 connects and retrieves it.

We were able to turnaround the solution in less than 30 days from the time the client asked us to research a solution until the time they were using it in their new beer garden. It would have been less, but I kept insisting on testing the tap for IPA (India Pal Ale) to make sure it was working, too – it may have slowed me down a little.
