Most of the images are of the keynotes although some feature the event sponsors. Meeting Of The Minds 2012 Wraps Up In San Diego California

The first Meeting of the Minds wraps up today in San Diego California. This two day gathering brought together 18 of our members from across the country for two days of collaboration and educational sessions.

Day One featured a 4 hour technical training session for members to learn how to create custom scripts for Sage 100 ERP (Formerly Sage ERP MAS 90 and 200).  Scripting uses VB Scripting to attach small portions of code to modify default Sage 100 ERP behavior. An example might be to add logic so that members of a certain security role cannot see any inventory costing information or access tabs where the costing information is contained.

Beginning with version 4.4 of Sage 100 ERP you may use something termed event scripting which unlike with older versions means you do not have to attach scripts to a button and instead can have them work based on a set of pre-defined conditions.

Other day one sessions included an overview of the new BizNet 6.0 and a comparison of BizNet to Sage MAS Intelligence.

The evening entertainment and dinner at La Jolla Strip Club  was sponsored by Sage Endorsed Partner and Document Imaging specialists Altec. Prior to their dinner Richard Simons of Altec gave a presentation about their PaperlessPlus imaging system which is an affordable (pricing starts at $6,000) way to take a step beyond the default paperless office capabilities including in Sage 100 ERP.

Russ Graff of Avalara provided a lunch time update on the sales tax processing solutions from   Avalara which integrates directly into Sage 100 ERP. Using zip codes to compute your sales tax? According to Russ (and he’s right) that’s not accurate enough to compute all sales taxes. The local governments are hiring auditors like there’s no tomorrow. His advice = don’t wait to be audited. They even compute sales tax by GPS coordinates!

Don’t have sales tax issues because most of your sales are for resale? Avalara offers a web based AvaTax Certs tool which tracks your exempt sale certificates.

The conference wrapped up with a Mexican themed dinner at Jim Woodhead’s home.

Sage Connecting The Dots! – Online Conference

It looks like Sage was in stealth mode with this online conference held yesterday September 28, 2010.
One of our 90 Minds members sat in on the conference and described it as a virtual exhibition hall with various vendors providing demonstrations. Sage’s site describes the conference as:

The agenda for the day seemed to focus mostly on business issues with one session early in the day providing information to both Accpac and MAS users on how to get the most out of their ERP investment.

Microsoft Convergence Field Report – Day 2 (waiting to be blown away)

The third day in New Orleans was somewhat quiet. We spent some time in the expo and it is surprising to see many of the same vendors that lurk at Insights as well.

GP does not have an out of the box Paperless solution. They can print registers to electronic files. There is a 3rd party available for rougly $1K per year for 5,000 documents. It is $400 for additional 5,000 blocks.

Their business portal solution has continued to develop and quite frankly is becoming very impressive based on Sharepoint. There are two installs (Windows Sharepoint Services and Microsoft Office Sharepoint Services) coined as WSS and MOSS. MOSS must be licensed and WSS is free. Again, BP ships out of the box and is an impressive Intranet site.

We spent some time with modifier which allows form (screen) customization. It is very powerful with most visual basic events available. The lost_focus and got_focus events are needed addition for Sage as well as load events. The customizer module is more powerful, but it is also more difficult to use than MAS. It is a double edge sword.

Ship Data Entry features are still not available. They have some advanced picking features but MAS’s ship data entry seems to be more specific to a shipper’s “role” than GP’s screen. GP feels more like invoice data entry in the old days of MAS. The advanced distribution features are impressive – but would need a thread of their own.

I also spent some time with Manufacturing this trip. I will need to test some of the details. (ie., WIP reconciliation when Manufacturing Orders are partially completed.) I saw a few items that I wish MAS would do; however I would need to also evaluate vice versa.

We made a side trip to Brad Pitt’s reconstruction of the Lower Ninth Ward. The destruction is amazing. The whole Lower Ninth is now a field with about 15 houses. Brad built most of them and a church built another. He has pushed green technology and storm sustainablility. One of the houses is mostly off grid. Electric bills are $3 – 8 per month. The cost of the panels on the new houses are less than 50% of the original homes less than two years ago. They also had Gustav come through after the constuction. The storm brought 130 mph winds. The houses withstood and the windows were left unboarded since they are tempered glass. Brad’s initiative is starting to set standards in green technology and building standards globally. www.makeitrightnola.org.

There is a 40 story Hyatt that sits hauntingly empty downtown.

Today – I am promised to be “blown away”. I must go prepare.
